Named after the latin word for “Way”, INTER is one of the most ambitious energy projects in the world today. In France, 35 nations* are collaborating to build the world’s largest tokamak, a magnetic fusion device that has been designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy based on the same principle that powers our Sun and stars. The massive project required 296 WES3 units and 15 trolleys, ensuring the safety of this ambitious nuclear project. The ITER Project is currently under construction on a 180-hectare site in southern France. Thirty-nine buildings and technical areas house the ITER Tokamak and its plant systems. This highly challenging project comprises multiple construction sites and WES3 was specified by the joint venture team due to its EN54-25 compliance, 24/7 coverage, ease of install, 3-year battery life and flexibility.

The Challenges of safeguarding such an ambitious project

Setting up the WES3 system for the ITER nuclear project posed several significant challenges due to the sheer scale and complexity of the site. Spanning 180 hectares with 39 buildings and multiple construction zones, ensuring seamless wireless connectivity across such a vast area required meticulous planning and strategic device placement. The high-security nature of a nuclear research facility also meant that every component needed to meet stringent safety regulations, including EN 54-25 compliance.

Additionally, the dynamic and evolving nature of the construction process required a flexible solution that could be easily relocated as work progressed. Managing and maintaining nearly 300 WES3 units while ensuring uninterrupted 24/7 monitoring further added to the logistical demands. Despite these challenges, the system’s adaptability, long battery life, and mobility-enhancing trolleys allowed for effective implementation, reinforcing ITER’s commitment to safety in one of the most ambitious energy projects in the world.
