Refurbishing an operational hospital presents a unique set of challenges, particularly when it comes to fire safety. At Szpital Praski in Warsaw, Poland, the ongoing refurbishment required a comprehensive fire protection solution to ensure the safety of both workers and patients while maintaining compliance with stringent safety regulations.
The Challenge of installing the system in the hospital in Warsaw
Hospitals pose a complex environment for fire safety, especially during renovations. The presence of flammable materials, construction dust, and continuous patient care operations heightens the risk of fire incidents. Standard fire detection systems can struggle in such conditions due to excessive dust and potential obstructions, increasing the likelihood of false alarms or system failures. Additionally, with different areas of the hospital undergoing phased refurbishments, a flexible and easily relocatable fire protection system was required to adapt to the evolving worksite.
Refurbishing Szpital Praski in Warsaw required a cutting-edge fire protection system, including dust-resistant smoke detectors and flexible WES3 units, to ensure safety and compliance with regulations while minimising disruptions.
Solution
To address these challenges, Warbud, the Polish operation of Vinci, implemented a cutting-edge fire safety system. A total of 20 WES3 units were strategically installed throughout the refurbishment site, offering early fire detection and emergency communication. The system included 8 dust-resistant smoke detectors designed to withstand high levels of airborne particles in construction zones, ensuring reliable fire detection without false alarms. Additionally, 11 call points were installed to allow workers to manually raise alarms in case of emergencies, improving response times. A single connect unit served as the central control point, integrating all WES3 units and enabling seamless communication across the site.
Outcome
By deploying the WES3 system, the refurbishment project at Szpital Praski successfully enhanced on-site fire safety while ensuring compliance with local fire regulations. The system’s dust-resistant technology prevented false alarms, reducing unnecessary disruptions to hospital operations. Additionally, the flexibility of WES3 units allowed for easy relocation as different sections of the hospital underwent refurbishment, ensuring continuous protection throughout the project.
